Climate neutral operation

Automobiles and oil-fired heaters are not the only sources of CO2 that pollute our environment. Users of the Internet also contribute to the emission of pollutants and thereby often unconsciously add to the harming of the environment. The server systems cause a considerable quantity of CO2 emissions.

To be climate neutral and still efficient to use, our servers needed to met important requirements on energy consumption. This was achieved by choosing processors with steeper power over performance curve, unbuffered memory and so on. We collected information on power use by various components (that we found rather scarce and quite often just missing) and are especially thankful to spec.org website who at the end helped us to choose the processor. As the "smart buy" of the preconfigured server was unlikely to deliver the carefully chosen stack, the server has been assembled from barebone. In our tests it used about 160 W when delivering ten full web interactions per second, counting download of applets and other media as part of the single interaction. We are unlikely to reach such a popularity soon and the server uses much less when idle. It is rather difficult to find any hints on the web if this is many or not, but it may be important that this is a server that also runs a database and generates dynamic content.

Our server housing centre Nine is the first Swiss Internet provider that is able to host active servers in a climate neutral manner. In this manner, we fully offset our CO2 emissions and operate in a climate neutral manner. We also support Swiss climate protection project.

Our group currently do not have travelling to the work place or other activities that would be related to Ultrastudio.org project, so we need not care about this to be climate neutral.
