While python is viewed as "fragile" by some strict rule supporters, this may only be an issue if the program is really big. An encyclopedic visualization is almost never big and likely using Python would not be a problem. Some fairly big subset of Python can also be compiled into Java and run as applets, with some library attached. The biggest question is the expected popularity as "applets on Python" topic is not particularly popular even on the Python project website.
