Moonlight is FOSS alternative of Silverlight. It would mean writing applets in C#. This should be attractive for people who love both Free Software and .NET - there are some, while it may look strange from the first sight. The biggest problem would be continuos pressure toward the "Windows only" way - almost for sure we would keep getting contributions that run on Silverlight and not on Mono - what to do with them, then? We may not have time to fix them all, and it will be increasingly difficult to discard that is, after all, contribution.
C# is of course sufficiently popular in big commercial projects, but we are still not fully sure it is popular enough between our potential contributors.
